In the first quarter of 2026, Anberry Transitional Care was owned by Donald Gormly, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This Merced County nursing home has been under Gormly’s ownership since Dec. 31, 2018.

Anberry Transitional Care operates as a for-profit facility.

For that period, the nursing home’s overall CMS rating was 3, which is below the California state average for nursing homes of 3.2. CMS assigns these ratings by assessing important areas such as health inspection results, staffing, and residents’ quality of care.

The data shows Anberry Transitional Care averaged 91.8 residents per day in the first quarter of 2026, out of 120 available beds. The nursing home does not operate as a hospital-based institution.

During the first quarter of 2026, Anberry Transitional Care reported no fines or penalties.

Altogether, Merced County had 8 for-profit nursing homes.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the country’s older adult population continues to grow, while the number of younger residents decreases. From 2020 to 2024, the American population ages 65 and over grew by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease among those under 18. Over the past century, the older adult population has surged, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.

Research published in 2021 indicates that almost half of these older adults, estimated at 28 million individuals, may require some sort of long-term services or support, with more than one third potentially needing nursing home care over time.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, said. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
